Description
This piece was completed in August 1985 and slightly revised for publication in 1994. It is a programmatic symphony in one continuous movement of seven sections depicting the discovery of America by the Vikings. The sections may be summarised as below:-

The movements are:-
1, A young Viking gazes at the aurora borealis
2. At the feast of the jarls, a blind harpists sings of Vinland the Good, the land beyond the seas.
3. The Vikings sets off to discover Vinland
4. The voyage of discovery, with storm
5. Discovering Vinland, they foresee the future of America
6 The voyage home, for a time becalmed, then arrival and welcome
7. An old Viking remembers the voyage, whilst gazing towards the midnight sun
