Six Bagatelles - for solo piano (B8)
These short pieces were written in 1981 for a friend of the composer whose ability to play the piano was, like the composer's, very limited: they are therefore quite easy to play!
Spot the quotations in numbers 1 - 5, but do not read too much into them!
Numbers 4 and 5 were re-used later in pieces 5 and 6 of Seven Songs Without Words (B17a): the Valse Triste (number 6) , together with the theme of number 2 also found their way into the Romantic Symphony (B14).
The first public performance was given on March 17th 1998 at Peel Hall, Salford University by David Martin who plays them on the CD of piano works by Colin Bayliss [New Century Classics NCCC2001].
